Cars (G) :

Cars, as the name suggests, is set in a world inhabited by motor vehicles. It is Pixar’s latest animated film, and is a visual treat. It’s a great effort from a technical point of view, and the kids are going to love it.

The story has a sleek race car named Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) finding himself caught by the law in a dusty desert town. There he learns Life Lessons, finds a sweetheart in a Porsche (Bonnie Hunt), and meets other car friends. Mater (Larry the Cable Guy), a trusty tow truck; and Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), a 1951 Hudson Hornet, together help the Lightning realize that there are more important things than prizes, fame and sponsorship. Between fighting with Doc and cruising the mountain passes with Sally, Lightning discovers an alternative to life in the fast lane.

The film runs for just under two hours, and does get dull at times. You’ll wish for jokes that were funnier, and supporting characters that had the same detail as those found in other Pixar movies like “Toy Story and Finding Nemo”. But the best moments are reserved for the end. Larry the Cable Guy will have you in splits, when he plays a redneck pickup truck.

The animators of this film came up with a new technique called “ray tracing,” which allows the cars to reflect their environments. All the hard work has paid off in the end, since they all look great. Cars is a brilliantly executed movie.
