Climates (not rated) :

Climates is Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's second project. His first was the magnificent Distant, in 2002. The movie is an intermittently engaging portrayal of the relationship between a professor and his much younger lover. It is an emotional tale of a relationship that has gone sour.

The two leads are played by the director and his wife, Ebru Ceylan. Playing the lead character, Isa is Bilge Ceylan himself. His role is that of a middle-aged man who would probably like to, but just can't, fully commit. Isa and Bahar (Ebru Ceylan) are spending a vacation on a Greek island off the sweltering Aegean coast, but it's clear that neither is happy. Bahar cries to herself as Isa spends the afternoon photographing ruins. Their relationship is slowly falling apart, probably due to Isa’s infidelity.

Isa returns to Istanbul, and starts sleeping with Serap (Nazan Kirilmis), who is an old flame of his. However, Isa is still in love with Bahar, and decides to salvage his relationship with her. He follows her from the hot beaches of the Mediterranean to the extremely cold east. Over hot tea, he tells her that he is a changed man now, and is “ready to change, get married, have kids, and leave Istanbul.”

The cinematography of the movie is quite spectacular. In addition, the performances are utterly natural. The movie is a study of male weakness. It also explores how a seemingly rock-solid relationship can be broken. With this movie, Bilge Ceylan’s popularity is all set to rise to new heights.
