Fly Boys (PG-13) :
Fly Boys is the story of the adventures of the Lafayette Escadrille, young Americans who volunteered for the French military before the U.S. entered World War I, and became the country's first fighter pilots. It is based on a true story, and largely faithful to that story
Flyboys is old-fashioned in just about every sense of the word, with the exception of the special effects. The special effects make it possible, more than any movie in recent memory, to graphically show the excitement and the adrenaline rush of combat flying. The movie portrays some of the horrors of war. As one of the characters says about the war, "Neither side will win. It will just end."
The characters are all based on real people. There’s the idealistic cowboy, Rawlings (James Franco; the wealthy New York scion Lowry (Tyler Labine); the loner ace pilot Cassidy (Martin Henderson); and the squadron's French captain, Thenault (Jean Reno).
There's also a black pilot, Skinner (Abdul Salis), who faces racial discrimination from his fellow pilots. All of the characters are easygoing and likeable.
There is no shortage of action in the movie-from aerial fights to blown-up planes. The scene where Cassidy (Martin Henderson) runs his plane into the Zeppelin is particularly gripping. There is also a little love story thrown in, just for variety.
While Flyboys is a good movie, it has nothing extraordinary to offer. If you are interested in two hours of passable entertainment, Flyboys is just the right movie. The movie will appeal to the younger audience. |
