Come Early Morning (R) :
Come Early Morning is the story of Lucy, (played by Ashley Judd) who is a small town girl. It is actress Joey Lauren Adams’s first outing as a director. All of the characters in the movie have an impact on the troubled life of Lucy.
Lucy is a pretty simple girl. She works as the assistant to the head of a construction company. She is a woman intent on succeeding and being accepted in a male-dominated world. Relationships do not mean anything to her, and she tries to sneak out before her lovers even wake up. As she says, she has no interest in “knowing the middle name of any guy”. But the big twist comes when she meets Cal (played by Jeffrey Donovan). He wants more than a one night stand. He actually cares and encourages her to stay for breakfast. In other words, Cal turns out to be “the right guy”.
This is one of Ashley Judd’s most compelling performances. She gets to show some real emotional pain in the movie. The other characters in the movie complement this performance brilliantly. Stacy Keach plays Lucy’s boss, while Laura Prepon plays the role of her roommate.
There is nothing flashy about Come Early Morning. It is just a series of good performances, which create a believable world of small town folk going about their lives. It is a terrific first effort by Adams. If she can produce more great movies like this one, she surely has a long career ahead of her. |
