past weekend:
Little Man is a scratchy, hilarious comedy. It has some ridiculous gags and gruesome jokes, which might not appeal to everyone. The outrageous sex jokes and comic humiliations are a bit over the top, to say the least.
The story is about Calvin “Babyface” Sims or “Little Man” who robs a jewelry store along with his partner Percy P. After the heist, Calvin drops the jewel in the purse of an unsuspecting young woman, Vanessa. Calvin then follows Vanessa and her husband Darryl to their home. Here he learns Darryl is desperate to father a child. So, three-foot-tall Calvin shows up on Darryl’s doorstep in a dog basket, much to the couple’s delight. They take him in, ignoring the fact that he has facial stubble and teeth, and mature genitalia.
Technically, Little Man is one of the best movies of the year. The 6-foot-2 Marlon Wayans acted the role entirely in front of a green screen, and his face was digitally imposed on a 9-year-old actor. The effect is utterly hilarious. Unfortunately, the film soon runs out of ideas. It then resorts to gross jokes, and humor that borders on offensive. The scene where Calvin tries to breast-feed with a neighbor is particularly gross.
To give some credit to Marlon’s performance, it is his voice and facial expressions that are the film’s biggest asset. His performance keeps the film from falling flat. Other than that, most mature audiences would probably find the raunchy jokes quite awful. It is definitely not recommended for family viewing. |
