Wordplay (PG) :

Wordplay is a must-see movie for those who are obsessed with crossword puzzles. It is not a particularly deep film, but it is consistently entertaining. If you’re a puzzle fan, and maybe even if you’re not, this movie gives a fun peek at one of the most popular hobbies around the world.

Shortz is a fascinating subject who explains how crossword puzzles are constructed, including rules and techniques. He also hosts an NPR program devoted to word puzzles, and runs the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Through him, we meet Merle Reagle, a puzzle designer who shows us exactly how a crossword is constructed.

The focus shifts to the Tournament that took place in Connecticut in March of 2005.
The tournament’s top three contenders are: Ellen Ripstein, a past champion; Al Sanders, and Trip Payne, who finds the letter “q” particularly fascinating. The stage is set for the second part of the film, which provides a thorough recap of the tournament. Will Trip hold onto his title? Or will Tyler become the youngest person ever to take home that oversized $5000 check?

You get remarkably caught up in the contestants’ lives. The direction is simple, but the story and its participants are compelling enough to keep your interest. Where Wordplay scores, is not so much in the contest footage, but in the interviews with average, everyday crossword fans. It is a playful, lightweight documentary. Like a good crossword, it is well-constructed. Most viewers will find it an enjoyable experience to watch the crossword crowd at their very best.
