Action movies are those movies where the story is explained mostly by way of physical action as against dialogues. The action mostly involves on the individual efforts of the hero. Actually this trend of action films started in the 1970s and is mostly linked to thrillers and adventure films. |
These action films assured reliable source of revenue for the movie makers and was aimed at male audiences aged mid 30s during 1990s and 2000s but later they added heroines in their team of action heroes respecting the call of the time. The massive response to the James Bond spy films in 1960s and 1970s popularized the action-based films.
But the action films were not dominant in Hollywood till 1980s. Only during 1980s action films are popularized by actors like Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Mel Gibson.
The 1988 film Die Hard wherein Bruce Willis plays a New York police detective influenced the making of the action films. Under Siege in 1992 and Air Force One in 1997 were made using same formula but in different settings. Action films require big budget stunt work and special effect settings and hence are considered very expensive.
Enough of action films mostly based on marital arts and acrobatics were there from Hong Kong whereas the American action movies are featuring mostly big explosions, car chases and stunt work with CGI special effect technology.
In fact, some of the American action movie makers started outsourcing CGI technology to many Asian companies so that they could save on overall production cost through this technology.
